‘Cannot accept’: Pastor Kanyari urges Oga Obinna to abolish Vurugu boxing after Mbavu’s loss

By , April 5, 2026

Pastor Victor Kanyari has expressed his disappointment and frustration following the highly anticipated Vurugu Fight Night, where amateur boxer Mbavu Destroyer suffered a controversial defeat to Protifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe.

In strong remarks directed at the event organiser, comedian and media personality Oga Obinna, Pastor Kanyari urged that no further boxing matches under Obinna’s banner should be staged.

“Oga Obinna, we don’t want those boxing matches again. We don’t want boxing matches organised by you,” Kanyari said while speaking at his church on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

He recalled his personal involvement in supporting Mbavu, revealing that he had brought the young fighter to his church for prayer and even gifted him Ksh50,000 to encourage his budding career.

The pastor expressed disbelief over how quickly Mbavu was defeated, noting that the loss occurred in the second round and involved a blow below the belt.

He described the outcome as unacceptable and questioned the fairness of the match, highlighting his deep concern for the integrity of boxing events organised under the Vurugu brand.

“You are a one-term person. I remember I brought Mbavu Destroyer here in this church and even prayed for him. And I gave him Ksh 50,000 after praying for him. And now you tell me he was defeated in the second round, not even the third… he was hit in the private parts and lost, no,” he said.

Vurugu Fight Night

The Vurugu Fight Night, held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, was one of the most highly anticipated amateur boxing events in recent Kenyan history.

The headline bout featured Protifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, facing off against Ferdinand Omondi, known as Mbavu Destroyer.

The fight had captured nationwide attention, largely fuelled by the boxers’ viral social media rivalry, dramatic weigh-ins, and ongoing pre-fight taunts and hype.

From the outset, the match was charged with intensity. Majembe came out aggressively, focusing on dominating the centre of the ring, while Mbavu opted for a more cautious, defensive approach.

The first two rounds saw back-and-forth exchanges, with both fighters landing solid blows. Fans in the arena, including a host of celebrities and VIPs, were on the edge of their seats as the energy inside Kasarani escalated.

The turning point came in the second round when Mbavu sustained a blow below the belt.

Unable to continue, he was attended by medical personnel, and the referee ultimately called off the match.

Judges awarded Majembe a unanimous victory based on points scored in the rounds completed.

Majembe’s win earned him the custom Vurugu Championship Belt unveiled by organiser Oga Obinna, as well as cash prizes and additional rewards sponsored by corporations and private individuals, including a brand-new Toyota Noah.

While the match was officially over after the second round, the spectacle was noted for its production value.

Mbavu’s entrance, complete with cinematic visuals and music, was widely compared to WWE-style introductions, creating a high-profile atmosphere reminiscent of professional international boxing events.
