Can your country even?: Larry Madowo marvels at Luxembourg’s free public transport system

By , April 1, 2026

Journalist Larry Madowo has expressed surprise at Luxembourg’s public transport system, which is free for everyone across the country.

He shared his experience on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, while moving around, noting that buses, trams, and trains are all free to use. The system applies not only within the city but throughout the entire country.

He explained that the transport system stood out because of how well it works despite being free. He pointed out that the services are modern and efficient, offering a level of comfort that is not always seen in other countries. He compared them to trains in the United States, saying they are newer and better maintained.

“All public transport is free in Luxembourg, not just here in the city, throughout the country,” Larry Madowo said in a video shared on his Instagram page.

Madowo went on to describe how every mode of transport is covered under the free system. He explained that buses, trams, and trains all operate without passengers having to pay. He added that the system is open to everyone, including residents, citizens, and tourists visiting the country.

“The bus is free, the tram is free, the train is free,” Larry Madowo said.

Accessibility and quality

Madowo, who has been vocal about immigration rules, further explained that the system only charges passengers who choose to travel first class. He said that while standard travel is free, those who want extra comfort can pay for upgraded services. This allows people to enjoy basic transport at no cost while still offering premium options.

“They are nicer and newer than trains you find in the US, and they’re completely free,” Larry Madowo said.

He added that the system treats everyone equally, regardless of where they come from. He explained that there are no restrictions based on nationality or status, making it accessible to all who use it.

“It is free for residents, it’s free for citizens, it’s free for tourists, it’s free for everyone,” Larry Madowo said.

Madowo concluded by sharing his disbelief at how such a system operates at such a high standard without charging users. He expressed how unusual it feels compared to many other countries, where transport costs are part of daily life.

“Honestly, this is too nice to be free,” Larry Madowo said.
