Archbishop JJ Gitahi recalls mother’s final moments in emotional reflection
By Steve Ireri, March 17, 2026Televangelist and founder of the Priesthood Church, Archbishop JJ Gitahi, has emotionally reflected on the final moments of his mother, Dorcas Wangari Muhihu, exactly two years after her passing.
Speaking during an interview with Kameme FM’s Muthoni Babytop on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Gitahi revealed that the day has remained vivid in his memory.
He noted his mum died on March 17, 2024, saying today marked exactly two years after she was called to be with the Lord.
“And I remember a day like today, the exact date, 17th March last year, 2024. At 11:00 a.m., that is when my mum, Dorcas, died,” Gitahi said.
He explained that at around 11:00 a.m., he was at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital when events began to unfold in a way he would never forget.
According to his recollection, doctors had momentarily taken him away under the pretext of stepping out for tea, only to later return and break the heartbreaking news to him.
“I was just here remembering that at this exact time, as I am here at Kameme FM, it is the same time last year when I was at the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, and the doctors broke the news to me,” he recalled.

He described how, moments before her passing, he had shared a final conversation with his mother, cherishing what would unknowingly become their last exchange.
He further revealed that their final interaction took place shortly before her death, which occurred just minutes later while he was walking down the hospital stairs.
The timing of everything, the date, the hour, and the sequence of events, Gitahi said, remains deeply etched in his memory, making the anniversary particularly emotional.
“They first told me to step out and go get some tea, then we came back to the hospital. I had been there with her, and I had my last conversation with her at 11:17, and she passed on at 11:19. I was walking down the stairs when she died,’ the preacher stated.
Despite the pain associated with the loss, Archbishop Gitahi expressed a sense of healing over time.
He noted that, a year later, he no longer dwells in sadness but instead chooses to remember his mother through the positive and joyful moments they shared.
He described her as a strong and resilient woman, a fighter who was always direct and firm in her character.
“It is the exact same day as today, and today is a day to remember her and to hold on to the positive memories. You usually heal with time, and now I am not sad. I remember the funny things she used to tell me. My mum was a fighter; she was so strong and always very direct,” Gitahi said.

He also shared that the moment of remembrance was not his alone, as his brother had reached out to him with a message, indicating that he, too, was reflecting on their mother’s life and legacy.
“My brother, JJ Junior, has also just sent me a message saying that where he is, he is also remembering our mum. May God continue to give her eternal rest, because she died a believer,” he stated.
