Alex Mwakideu wonders why erectile problems once seen in elders, now common in youth

Radio host Alex Mwakideu has wondered why erectile problems, once seen only in older men, are now affecting young men.

In his radio show on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, he weighed in on the recent studies, which show that one in ten young men now experience erectile problems. He explained that these issues were once common only among older men but are now increasingly seen among men aged 18 to 35.

“Haya ni matatizo ya wazee lakini sasa hivi si matatizo ya wazee tena,” he said.

He asked why these problems are affecting young men today and why this trend is rising.

He said several studies also found that many young men have had to buy medication to improve their sexual performance.

“Utafiti huo huo, vijana wengi hawa, kati ya 18 and 35 years, wamelazimika kuenda kununua madawa za kuongeza nguvu za kiume,” he explained.

He questioned why these problems are appearing in youth when they were historically seen in elders.

“Hivi kwa nini? Why is it happening? Why is it happening kwa vijana hawa?” he asked.

Lifestyle factors linked to erectile problems

Mwakideu said doctors who conducted the recent studies linked the rise in erectile problems to lifestyle factors. He explained that many young men who experience these problems smoke cigarettes, use marijuana, drink alcohol, or take other drugs.

“Madaktari ambao wameendesha utafiti huu wanasema wengi wao walipatikana kwamba ni watu ambao wanatumia sigara, wengi wao wanatumia bangi, wengine wanatumia pombe, na wengine madawa tu ya kulevya,” he said.

He suggested that modern habits are affecting the health of younger men more than previous generations.

He added that the situation raises questions about awareness and prevention.

“Nikiuliza, kwani wazee wa zamani walikua hawakunywi pombe? Ama hii pombe mnakula leo ni pombe gani?” he asked.

He said the findings should prompt young men to be more careful about their lifestyle choices and seek guidance from medical professionals when needed.

Mwakideu concluded that erectile problems are no longer just a concern for older men and that the younger generation must take steps to protect their sexual health.
