Kenyan actor, scriptwriter, and content creator Abel Mutua has fondly admitted that his wife, Judy Nyawira, is his ride or die.

The filmmaker shared this sentiment on Monday, January 19, 2025, during a candid conversation about their 17-year journey on the Judy Nyawira podcast.

“Me nilipatana na dem ride or die,” Abel said on Judy Nyawira’s podcast on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The couple introspected on what really holds marriage and keeps it together. For Abel, the secret is the foundational saying, “It is the friendship that holds marriage together.” This emphasis on deep companionship over fleeting romance is what has enabled the success of their marriage.

Judy affirmed their partnership, acknowledging their journey from ground zero. She further emphasised that every achievement has been a shared endeavour.

“When I look at you, I see the journey that we’ve been on,” she told Abel, highlighting their shared history as their greatest asset. Judy admitted to the possibilities in life, which they have had, and everything they have achieved is a collective effort.

The couple contrasted modern marital pressures with their own experience. Abel observed a significant shift, noting that men are now often judged solely by their material offerings. “Back then,” Abel reflected, “ladies judged men by potential.” This focus on shared future promise, rather than immediate gain, defined their early bond and allowed them to build a life in tandem.

Judy then posed the question to Abel, “What are we unlearning?” Abel revealed they actively discard restrictive norms from upbringing, culture, and personal baggage, choosing to define their partnership on their own terms rather than defaulting to how we normally do things.

Their journey traces back to humble beginnings, with cherished snippets of their early life together as struggling students on campus. Those formative years of shared struggle solidified their ride-or-die foundation. This intentional creation of a shared life, built on friendship, mutual potential and a willingness to grow and unlearn, is the central lesson in their 17 years of marriage.
