Starlet Wahu murder: Witness says Matara used different name at South B Hospital
By Zipporah Ngwatu, October 3, 2025A key witness in the murder trial of John Matara has revealed that the accused used a different name when seeking services at their facility.
Rahma Abdul Muthoni, a receptionist at South B Hospital, told the court that on the night of January 3, 2024, she was on a night shift, which usually starts at 6 pm.

Appearing virtually before Milimani High Court Judge Alexander Muteti on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Rahma testified that the accused arrived at the hospital at around 10 pm, bleeding from his arms and legs.
“At around 10 pm, a man with injuries came, and it was an emergency. We received the patient at the gate since he was bleeding from the arms and legs,” Rahma told the court.
She further said the man also had a white towel soaked in blood on his leg.
Being an emergency, the doctor attended to him immediately and discovered that he had lost a lot of blood.

“The white towel was on his leg, so when he came in, the doctor checked him and said he had lost a lot of blood,” the receptionist testified.
After receiving first aid, Rahma proceeded to the emergency room to take his details for billing.
The man told her that his name was Fredrick Opondo, he was 36 years old, and his phone number was 079***81.

However, Rahma informed the court that the man turned rude to the nurses on duty that night when they tried to get more details about his family.
She said the nurse on shift enquired if he had relatives or a wife, since he had been brought in by a boda boda rider who wanted to leave.

According to Rahma, a patient in critical condition is not supposed to be left alone at the hospital as per their facility’s rules.
“After that, the guy was kind of rude to the nurses when they tried to enquire from him about his relatives,” Rahma stated.
He later told them that he did not have a wife but had a mother who lived far from Nairobi.
The facility later decided to refer him to Mbagathi Hospital for further treatment.
The court was also told that the boda boda riders who brought the accused to the hospital said they found him bleeding on the road. He reportedly told them he had been attacked by thieves, prompting them to rush him for treatment.
“I remember when he was brought to the hospital, the boda boda guys said they found him on the road, and he told them he had been attacked by thieves,” Rahma testified.
Notably, the court also heard that the accused had deep wounds.
Later, a man came to the hospital looking for him, and the facility informed him that the accused had been referred to Mbagathi Hospital for further treatment.
It was this man who revealed to them that he was following the accused to know what had happened since he had left an apartment bleeding, contradicting the account recorded at the facility.
