Self-confessed fraudster breaks down in court as he pleads for mercy
By Zipporah Ngwatu, November 12, 2025A 29-year-old man, Ian Njuguna, who has been charged with multiple insurance frauds amounting to Ksh683,290, has told the court that he is guilty of the charges and pleads for mercy.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Njuguna broke down in tears, urging the court to have mercy on him.
He also told the court that he had confessed to the authorities and informed them of the circumstances that led to his actions.
The accused told the court that he was ailing and needed money for his medication to survive, leading him to commit the crime.
The court was later informed that the self-confessed fraudster was suffering from epilepsy, a condition he has been managing.
“I confessed to AAR, to Jubilee, and to APA and to the Insurance Fraud Unit from the date of my arrest, and I told them the circumstances that I was going through that have been captured by my report,” Njuguna told the court.
Further, he said that he was very sorry for his action of indulging in crime.
“I was sincere; actually, I am really, really sorry.”
According to the charge sheet, Njuguna is said to have wilfully and unlawfully presented false documents, namely a discharge summary for inpatient treatment, a receipt and a final inpatient bill invoice purported to have been issued at Baragoi Catholic Nursing Home on August 27, 2024, to APA Insurance Company head office in Nairobi.
Njuguna also presented a police abstract alleged to be from Baragoi police station on the allegation of being admitted at the said facility after being involved in a road accident in support of the APA Medical Insurance reimbursement claim amounting to Ksh311,150 alleged to be medical expenses incurred during treatment.
The court papers also state that on or before March 23, 2025, Njuguna at the APA Insurance Company head office in Nairobi presented the documents from the same facility that indicated that he had been admitted after suffering from complicated malaria with sepsis in support of the APA medical insurance reimbursement claim amounting to Ksh91,490.
