Police recover livestock after fierce gun exchange with bandits
By Cynthia Lodite, August 5, 2025The National Police Service has recovered stolen livestock in Samburu County following a multi-agency security operation coupled with a dramatic confrontation with suspected bandits.
According to a report released by the National Police Service on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the persons of interest were apprehended on Monday, August 4, 2025, in the wee hours of the night.
“In a well-coordinated security operation conducted last night, a multi-agency team in Samburu County successfully recovered stolen livestock following an encounter with suspected bandits,” NPS said.
Likewise, according to the Authority, the operation, carried out by a coordinated team of police units and conservancy rangers, led to the whereabouts of the persons of interest near the Silver area of Ol Kanjau.
Police units helping curb banditry
In addition National Police Service has noted that the current operations highlight ongoing efforts to curb banditry and enhance security in the region.
“The team—comprising officers from Archers Post Police Station, the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), National Police Reservists (NPR), and rangers from Sera and Kalama Conservancies—pursued the bandits, eventually making contact in the Silver area near Ol Kanjau,” NPS added.

Meanwhile, the police further revealed that at the time of the operation, there was a gunfire exchange between the police and the persons of interest, which thus led to them abandoning the already stolen livestock.
Notably, NPS, while thanking the exemplary coordination of the security teams, NPS assured the public that all the livestock were recovered unharmed and have since been returned to the owners.
“A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, during which the suspects were overpowered and forced to flee, abandoning the stolen animals. Thanks to the bravery, coordination, and relentless efforts of the security team, all livestock were recovered unharmed and have since been returned to the rightful owner,” NPS said.
