Police dismantle illicit liquor den in Meru as owner evades arrest

In a statement on the National Police Service (NPS) official X account on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, police confirmed that the operation was conducted in Laare, Igembe North Sub-County.

Likewise, the police revealed that the crackdown on illicit brew has intensified in the county in a bid to safeguard public health.
“Police officers in Meru County have intensified their crackdown on illicit brews and drug abuse as part of efforts to safeguard public health. During an operation in Laare, Igembe North Sub-County, officers raided a homestead suspected of being a major production point for Chang’aa,” NPS said.

Following the raid, police officers confirmed that the person of interest fled the homestead moments before they could gain entry.
Meanwhile, the police discovered an active brewing operation inside the compound.
The officers managed to seize several items of brewing apparatus and quantities of the illicit brew, which, according to the police report, were secured at the station pending further investigation.

The chase
On the other hand, the police have further revealed that efforts to apprehend the person of interest behind the illegal operation are ongoing. Additionally, the police continue to intensify operations to curb the manufacture and distribution of illicit alcohol.

The National Police Service is now calling on members of the public to support the initiative by sharing information on suspicious activities and joining efforts to protect communities, especially the youth, from the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
