Murang’a police bust gang behind massive boda boda theft
By K24 Digital Reporter, November 21, 2025Police in Muranga have arrested three persons of interest involved in an intricate web of boda boda theft, where about 100 motorbikes have been stolen from the County in a year.
In a press briefing on Friday, November 21, 2025, the county’s police commander, Kemboi Kimaiyo, said two of the persons of interest from Murang’a County were smoked from their hideout in Mukuyu village near Murang’a town two days after robbing a boda boda rider of his motorbike.
“The riders followed the police Land Cruiser that whisked them to safety up to Murang’a police station, where officers had a hectic time shielding them from harm,” he stated.

Kimaiyo added that the persons of interest were first rushed for treatment at Murang’a Level Five Hospital for the injuries that they sustained.
“After interrogation, the duo disclosed that after stealing motorbikes in different parts of Muranga County, they sell them to a mechanic based at Kimbimbi trading centre in Kirinyaga County, who dismantles them and then reassembles them using spare parts stolen from other motorbikes to conceal identity. The motorbikes are then sold,” Kimaiyo revealed.

This comes even as the security agencies caution Kenyans to be safe as they launch a nationwide crackdown ahead of the festive season, when the crime rate surges.
The duo was saved in the nick of time by police officers from a blood thirsty mob of riders who wanted to lynch them.
The two persons of interest led police to Kimbimbi, where their accomplice was arrested in a coordinated operation by police officers from Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties. A motorbike believed to have been stolen, together with assorted spare parts, was recovered.
The three, together with the exhibits, were later driven to Murang’a police station under heavy police escort with boda boda riders who got wind of the incident giving chase.

Kimaiyo, who was flanked by Murang’a East OCPD Teresiah Muriuki and the sub-county Criminal Investigations Officer Gaceri Makau, said the police have spread their dragnet wide to apprehend other suspects who are on the run to face justice.
The trio is expected to be arraigned in court after police complete the investigations.
