Police in Migori on Tuesday night June 18, 2024, shot and killed five suspected members of a notorious gang following a prolonged surveillance operation.

The suspects, believed to be part of the 42 Brothers Gang, were implicated in a series of criminal activities across Migori and neighbouring counties.

The gang has been notorious for its involvement in numerous crimes, including house burglaries and violent attacks.

Ben Aliwa, the senior chief of the Nyabisawa location, recounted the events leading to the fatal encounter.

He said the five suspects were tracked while travelling in a vehicle and were intercepted in the Nyamasongo area by members of the flying squad.

“We received a call that five people were shot along a highway, and we proceeded with police from Nyabisawa police post and headquarters to the scene,” Aliwa said.

The confrontation ended with the suspects’ vehicle being riddled with bullets, forcing it to a halt at the side of the road.

Upon inspection, police discovered house-breaking tools inside the vehicle, linking the suspects to a recent spate of burglaries, including a high-profile theft at a popular bar.

This incident follows the recent arrest of six other gang members, who were apprehended after the 42 Brothers Gang attacked two individuals, including a teacher, who were pursuing stolen cattle in Suna-Kwa location, Suna East Sub County.

“Two days ago, two people, among them a teacher from a local school, were attacked in Uriri,” Suna Kwa location Chief Evance Achola said.

The police swiftly acted, detaining six gang members linked to this and other criminal activities in the area.

Achola highlighted the community’s crucial role in combating the gang, noting that while most residents have been supportive of the police efforts, some relatives of gang members have been less cooperative.

He further noted the gang’s troubling recruitment of young boys aged between 17 and 20, indicating a well-coordinated operation.

The police crackdown on the 42 Brothers Gang signifies a robust response to escalating criminal activities, aiming to restore peace and security in Migori and its environs.
