A middle-aged man has been handed a 30-year jail term for committing murder.

The sentence was handed down by Justice A.K. Ndungu at the Nanyuki High Court on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

According to a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the man was found guilty of hacking another man to death in 2015. The prosecution, led by Jackson Motende and Esther Kimani, successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The prosecution, led by Jackson Motende and Esther Kimani, presented evidence that proved the case beyond any reasonable doubt,” the ODPP statement read in part.

According to the ODPP, the murder took place on May 19, 2015, in the Kimagandura area of Laikipia County. The court found that the accused had committed the brutal act without showing any remorse for his actions. The court further described the manner of the killing as “particularly barbaric.”

“The court was convinced that the accused had committed the offence of murder as charged. The particulars of the offence were that on 19th May 2015, at Kimagandura Area, within Laikipia County, the accused murdered the deceased by hacking him to death,” the ODPP stated.

Adding;

“In issuing the sentence, the court further observed that the accused showed no remorse for his actions. It was also noted that the manner in which he killed the deceased was particularly barbaric.”

Justice Ndungu also acknowledged the profound effect the death had on the victim’s family, as the deceased had been their primary breadwinner.
