Man charged with fraud for receiving Ksh1.2M and promising military jobs
By Zipporah Ngwatu, November 24, 2025Joshua Muthwii Maingi has been charged with obtaining money by false pretences from unsuspecting citizens, promising Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) positions contrary to section 313 of the Penal Code.
According to the charge sheet, Maingi, with others not before the court, falsely asked for Ksh700,000 from one Kenneth Lomerical, promising him a KDF letter for his son to join the forces recruit training in Eldoret.
“On October 7, 2025, at Cherrywood apartments, jointly with others not before court, with intent to defraud, you obtained from Kenneth Lomerical Kimaiwa the sum of Ksh700,000 by falsely pretending you were in a position to give a Kenya Defence Forces admission letter to his son Kelvin Chilimo Kimaiwa to join Recruit Training School (RTS) at Moi barracks in Eldoret,” part of the charge sheet read.
In another count, Maingi and his accomplices who were not in court have been charged with obtaining Ksh510,000 from Robert Kipkurui Ng’etich on count four, on November 10, 2025, by falsely pretending they were in a position to give a KDF admission letter to his daughter Brenda Chepkorir to join the Recruit Training School (RTS) at Moi Barracks in Eldoret.

The State has also charged Maingi with personation contrary to section 382 of the Penal Code for representing himself as a KDF military officer in the rank of Brigadier of the Air Force on November 17, 2025, while at Cherrywood Apartments within Kilimani Sub-county in Nairobi County.
The accused has also been charged with being in possession of public stores contrary to section 324 (2) as read with section 36 of the Penal Code.
“On November 17, 2025, at Cherrywood Apartments within Kilimani Sub-County in Nairobi County in the Republic of Kenya, you had in your possession public stores, namely, one pair of Kenya Air Force combat dress, two slip-ons of rank (Brigadier), two gorget patches of ranking officer (Brigadier) and one Kenya Air Force badge of rank of brigadier of the Kenya Defence Forces, such property being reasonably suspected of having been stolen or unlawfully obtained,” part of the charge sheet read.

Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego on Monday, November 24, 2025, Maingi denied all the charges, and a plea of not guilty was entered.
The court has released him on a bond of Ksh1 million with an alternative of Ksh500,000 cash bail and ordered him to deposit his passport in court.
“The accused is granted a bond of Ksh1 million with one surety of a similar amount with an alternative of Ksh500,000 cash bail with two contact persons, and he should deposit his passport in court,” Magistrate Alego ruled.
