Luanda: Police nab narcotics, launch manhunt for persons of interest
By David Nthua, August 6, 2025The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in an intelligence-led operation, seized cannabis sativa in Luanda, Vihiga County, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.
The operation was conducted by officers from Luanda Police Station following what the DCI described as “a tip-off about suspicious cartons that had been left behind by an unknown motorcycle rider” in Emabungo Location.
Suspicious cartons
Police responding to the call said that upon arriving at the scene, they immediately inspected the boxes and discovered “16 bales of suspected Cannabis sativa, weighing approximately 40 kilograms.”
The find was promptly secured and documented as part of the case exhibits. Investigators believe the packages had been abandoned by a person of interest who escaped moments before the officers arrived.
According to the DCI, “Investigations are underway to establish the identity and whereabouts of the motorcycle rider.”
They suspect the consignment was part of a larger drug supply chain destined for distribution within Vihiga County and possibly beyond.
Security sources indicated that the swift recovery was made possible by the cooperation of residents who noticed the suspicious drop and alerted the authorities without delay.
The officers acted on the intelligence immediately, preventing the narcotics from entering the local market.

Ongoing hunt
The seized drugs have since been transferred to the police station under tight security, where they remain preserved as exhibits. The DCI stated, “The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to combating drug trafficking and illicit brews.”
Detectives are now following several leads aimed at tracking down the person of interest and dismantling the network that facilitated the transportation of the cannabis.
Police say that once the rider is located, he will face prosecution under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, a law that carries severe penalties for possession and trafficking of illegal substances.
