22 illegal firearms surrendered in Kerio following govt’s directive
By Aloys Michael, September 23, 2025As part of the efforts to enhance peace in security-prone Kario Valley, twenty-two illegal AK-47 rifles and 108 rounds of ammunition were voluntarily surrendered by residents.
The move follows the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s directive to the locals to surrender the firearms as part of the Jukwa la Usalama solution implementation strategy.

“The weapons were handed over to the sub-county security team in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County, through the support of local peace committees operating in Ketut, Mokoro, Murukutwo, Chesuman, Mon, Chemwonyo, Chechan, and Koibirir locations,” the police X statement read on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
According to police, the surrendered firearms are now secured at Tot Police Station. Authorities say this marks a major milestone in the region’s commitment to voluntary disarmament, community-led peace initiatives, and the broader government directive aimed at curbing armed conflict in the North Rift.

“This positive development underscores the growing community commitment to peace, security, and voluntary disarmament. Such efforts remain critical in reducing armed conflict, fostering trust, and promoting peaceful coexistence in the Kerio Valley region,” the statement read.

The National Police Service lauded the collaborative efforts of residents, elders, and peace committees in making the surrender possible.
“We commend the cooperation of the public, elders, and peace committees. We urge sustained support in fostering peace through information sharing and the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms,” police said.
The disarmament is part of a wider national initiative to stem insecurity in conflict-prone areas, as the police emphasise the door remains open for others in possession of illegal firearms to come forward without fear of reprisal.
This comes a day after the residents of Murukutwa, Chechan, Chemwonyo, and Talai Villages in Kolowa in Elgeyo Marakwet County voluntarily handed over at least seven illegal firearms to the police.

In an X statement by the police on Monday, September 22, 2025, the seven AK-47 rifles were voluntarily surrendered by the members of the community in a bid to curb armed conflicts in the region.
The police have further revealed that the rifles were surrendered on Sunday, 21st September 2025, and received by the sub-county security team with the support of local peace committees.
“Police in Tot, within Elgeyo Marakwet County, have received seven AK-47 rifles that were voluntarily surrendered by members of the community on Sunday, 21st September 2025,” police said.
