2 arrested as police recover gun linked to murder
By Aloys Michael, July 31, 2025Police have recovered an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in the fatal shooting of Nelly Echukut, a woman whose murder shocked residents of Isiolo County.
The breakthrough came after two persons of interest were arrested in connection with the killing led investigators to their hideout in a coordinated multi-agency operation.
The search involved officers from Kulamawe Police Station, the DCI’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit in Isiolo, National Police Reservists (NPR), and the Assistant Chief of Kakili Sub-Location in Isiolo Sub-County.
“The suspects guided the team to the location where the weapon was hidden,” police said in a statement released Thursday, July 31, 2025, on its X account.
At the hideout, the officers recovered an AK-47 rifle and three rounds of ammunition. Investigators believe this was the weapon used in the killing of Echukut, who was gunned down in what authorities suspect may have been a targeted attack.
“The recovered firearm will undergo forensic testing to link it conclusively to the crime,” police said.
Police praised the swift action of the multi-agency task force and promised to pursue all individuals connected to the murder. The duo are currently in custody as investigations continue.
Govt on insecurity
Meanwhile, the government extended the declaration of parts of Marsabit County as security-disturbed and dangerous, following continued insecurity in the region.
In a gazette notice dated July 10, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the declaration made on May 9, 2025, will remain in force for another thirty days, starting July 11, 2025, at 6:30 pm.
The extension was made under Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, and follows consultations with the National Security Council.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National
Security Council extends the declaration made on May 9, 2025, declaring parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous,” read the notice.
According to the notice, the extension will be effective for 30 days from 11th July, unless withdrawn or further extended.
“This notice shall take effect on July 11, 2025, as of 6.30 pm, for thirty (30) days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette, direct,” Murkomen said.
