Anti-narcotics detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have seized methamphetamine drug at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a statement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, DCI detectives stated the drug is valued at Ksh9.2 million.

According to the detectives who uncovered the planned drug trafficking syndicate, the suspects had planned to ship out the consignment using a courier service.

The methamphetamine drug was concealed in a bigger consignment which was supposed to be shipped on Monday, July 1, 2024.

“Attempts by a suspect to traffic 1.15kg of methamphetamine through the Jomo Kenyatta Intn’l Airport have proved futile after the concealed parcel stuffed in a bigger consignment was discovered at the FedEx Express warehouse,” a statement shared by DCI said.

“The seizure of the Ksh9.2 million drug in street estimates followed a tip-off to Anti-Narcotics detectives based at JKIA yesterday, prompting a search within the warehouse at the Mitchell Cott Shed,” the statement added.

DCI detectives have since launched investigations to identify the trafficker and intended destination.

Previous arrests

In March 2024, DCI detectives arrested five suspects believed to be part of a larger cocaine-smuggling ring after intercepting a woman with 57 pellets of cocaine at JKIA.

The primary suspect had concealed the pellets in her underwear when she was flagged down at JKIA’s terminal A1 central screening area just before boarding a Madagascar-bound plane.

“A body scanner at the checkpoint revealed suspicious items concealed around her privates, triggering a quick search that saw 600g of the highly addictive cocaine discovered. A spot test conducted on the discovery was positive for the coca product,” DCI stated.

After interrogation, the suspect led detectives to other suspects who are believed to have recruited the arrested woman.

“In the painstaking pursuit to break the entire syndicate, the second suspect led officers to Free Area Hotel building and into the VIP Beauty Shop, where a meticulous search was conducted and another 33 pellets of crack found,” DCI said.

“Prosecution processes have been instigated on the arrested suspects.”
