Vera Sidika demands urgent action over rising gender based violence
By Paulette Mboga, November 17, 2025Vera Sidika has spoken out strongly against gender-based violence (GBV), calling for urgent action to protect women and stop abuse in marriages.
On Monday, November 17, 2025, she described GBV as totally unacceptable and warned that many women lose their lives because of it.
Sidika said, “GBV is totally unacceptable. A lot of women die in marriages coz of this.” Her remarks come amid recent discussions following a viral incident involving the daughter of Mike Sonko.

Other celebrities have also weighed in on the issue, highlighting the serious consequences of GBV. Janet Mbugua reacted to the incident, noting the dangers women face daily.
She said, “You’ve seen the Mike Sonko video. A daughter was assaulted. A father stepping in. It is painful to watch because it is the reality for so many.” Mbugua said the need to name and address such acts correctly.
Urgent need to protect survivors
Mbugua continued, “We need to name what this is. GBV. Violence. A violation of safety and dignity.” She highlighted the importance of creating support systems for those at risk.
Survivors must know where to turn in dangerous situations. She encouraged anyone in danger, or who knows someone in danger, to reach out to a trusted friend, neighbour, or crisis line. Both Sidika and Mbugua stressed that GBV survivors deserve safety, support, and justice.

They further called on authorities to ensure that those who perpetrate abuse are held accountable through proper legal channels. Sidika noted that incidents like the recent viral video show the urgent need for society to act and for families and communities to protect vulnerable individuals.
The message from both celebrities shows the growing concern about domestic violence and the need for comprehensive action to address it.
GBV continues to be a major issue in Kenya, with many cases going unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of support. Voices like Sidika’s and Mbugua’s aim to raise awareness and push for stronger protections, helping to ensure that women can live free from violence and that offenders face the consequences of their actions.
