Mkamburi Chigogo baffled as Gen Z bake in winter clothes amid Nairobi heatwave
By Paulette Mboga, December 3, 2025Radio host Mkamburi Chigogo has raised eyebrows over the way Gen Z are dressing in Nairobi, questioning why young people wear heavy clothes in the hot weather.
On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, she pointed out that while the sun is blazing, many young people continue to wear winter-style clothing, making little sense to him.
Chigogo said, “Watoto wa saa hii, kwani hawaskii joto iko huku? Unajua jana nilikua mjini, jua iko hapa. Hii jua ni kama imetumwa sielwei. It is blazing.” She described seeing young people in black socks made of heavy material, clothing normally meant for cold months. “Tutoto tunaingia, hutu tu Gen Z. Mtu ako na socks za black, heavy material. Things that people wear in July. Wakilala,” she said, showing his disbelief at the fashion choices.

She also noticed that some young people wear puff jackets with additional layers underneath, even though the temperature is high. “Gen Z amevaa hiyo kitu ametoka. Gen Z amevaa puff jacket. Na kakitu ndani lakini the puff jacket is on top. Man’s not hot,” she said. Chigogo described others wearing oversized sweaters and baggy clothes that do not fit properly. “Mwingine sweater, kubwa, halafu they don’t wear fitting clothes. It has to be extra extra baggy,” she explained.
Commenting on hoodies and jumpers
Chigogo further commented on hoodies and jumpers that Gen Z continue to wear despite the heat. She wondered if they even felt the temperature.
“Sasa hawa wakuvaa hizi hoodies na jumper, hawaskii hii joto?” she asked. Despite her criticism, she added a light note about appreciating young people. “Mimi niliangalia hivi nikasema youth is priceless,” she said, showing that her remarks come from curiosity.

She concluded by reflecting on how the older generation often struggles to understand Gen Z and their ways.
Many adults find it confusing why young people dress in ways that seem to ignore the weather or practical comfort. Fashion, especially among the youth, has become more about self-expression and individuality than simply adapting to temperature.
Ultimately, Mkamburi Chigogo’s remarks show that while older generations may question Gen Z’s fashion sense, the youth have their own ways of doing things, and understanding them requires an open mind and acceptance of changing trends.
