Content creator Mitchelle Joyce Akoth Oruko, alias Mjaka Mfine, has shared a distressing account of being robbed in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Speaking to Milele FM’s Tony Mwirigi on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Mjaka revealed that she lost her human hair wig, valued at Ksh17,000, to thieves.

She explained that human hair wigs typically start at Ksh15,000 and above, and hers was priced at Ksh17,000.

Human hair inaanza na Ksh15K and above. Yangu ilikuwa Ksh17K,” she shared.

“I did not call anyone.”

Robbery

This comes amid growing reports that gangs are targeting individuals, using intimidation and threats to steal from Nairobians.

The criminals are also using violent and deceptive tactics to rob unsuspecting people. Reports show that the groups are not only mugging pedestrians but also drugging their victims, leaving them helpless as their belongings are taken. The return of such crimes has raised fear and concern among city residents.

The gangs are said to be operating in broad daylight, especially along streets like Moi Avenue, Kimathi Street and near popular food joints. Victims report being cornered by people posing as street children or casual passersby, only for the encounter to turn into an attack. Some gangs threaten to smear human waste on their victims if they resist, while others reportedly drug people, causing them to black out before stealing from them.

In response to the growing insecurity, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a crackdown on criminal groups in Nairobi and other towns. Security officers have been directed to step up patrols and hunt down the gangs behind the attacks.

Some arrests have already been made, and Murkomen has warned that the government will not tolerate weaknesses in policing. He also noted that some criminals hide under the guise of street children, which has made the fight more complicated.

Even with these efforts, the fear among Nairobi residents remains. Videos circulating online show people being surrounded and robbed in broad daylight, pointing to how bold and organised the gangs have become. Many Nairobians are now more alert when walking in town, with some avoiding the CBD altogether after dark.
