Laughter broke out at the burial of gospel singer Betty Bayo after Prophet Kanyari paused his tribute and joked about his struggle with English.

The service, held today, Thursday, November 20, 2025, at her Mugumo home on Kirigiti Road near Kamiti Corner, had been tense and emotional until the moment he stepped up and spoke.

The crowd burst into laughter the second he began with, “Sijui kusoma kizungu sana lakini nang’ang’ana,” before adding “Amen” and continuing with his message. The light moment eased the atmosphere as mourners settled to hear his tribute to the mother of his children.

Kanyari tried to read his prepared message but kept stopping, making the crowd laugh even more. At one point, he admitted, “Hehh, kusoma hii kitu,” which sent the crowd into another round of laughter before he quietly added, “Mungu anisaidie.”

His struggle to stick to his script made many smile, turning a heavy moment into one filled with warmth as he remembered the years he shared with Betty.

Tribute filled with memories

In his message, Kanyari shared how his relationship with Betty began 13 years ago. He described meeting a young woman who was always smiling and gentle in a way that could calm even the busiest day.

He told the mourners that they connected instantly and that within weeks, they could not imagine life apart. He spoke of how they would visit each other, share stories about their dreams, and laugh together about their struggles.

“13 years ago, fate allowed our paths to cross. I met this ever-smiling, tiny young girl whose gentleness would come even on the busiest of days.”

“We connected instantly, and within weeks, we couldn’t imagine life apart from each other. We would meet and visit each other and share stories about our dreams and laugh about our struggles,” Kanyari said.

Kanyari also mentioned the small house she lived in when they first met, saying he could already tell that she was the woman he wanted to marry. He explained that he was looking for a wife, and that is why, within a few months, they were living as husband and wife.

Although he struggled to read the full tribute, he wanted to honour the years they shared and the life they built before going their separate ways. His mix of humour, honesty, and memories painted a picture of a relationship that began with joy and hope.
