Gospel musician and disability activist Daddy Owen has condemned the growing trend of mocking persons with disabilities on social media.

Daddy Owen, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, through social media, expressed disappointment at how some individuals have chosen to use their online platforms to insult and demean people living with disabilities.

Daddy Owen said such behaviour is not only disrespectful but also harmful to the dignity of persons with disabilities.

“As a disability activist, I am deeply saddened and appalled by individuals who have chosen to misuse their social platforms to insult and demean persons with disabilities and their conditions. I strongly condemn such reprehensible behaviour,” he stated.

He warned that such actions may end up justifying the enforcement of harsh laws that could threaten human rights.

“These actions only serve to legitimise the government’s enforcement of laws such as the Cybercrime Bill. We must not allow our own misconduct to become the justification for policies that may ultimately infringe upon fundamental freedoms and human rights,” he added.

Calls for respect and awareness

Daddy Owen reminded the public that disability is not something anyone chooses and that it can happen to anyone at any time.

He emphasised the importance of showing empathy, understanding, and respect toward persons with disabilities.

“Let me remind everyone of a profound truth, disability is a club that anyone can join at any moment. Some are born into it, but the majority acquire disabilities through unforeseen circumstances such as accidents or medical conditions. No one is immune,” he said.

He further quoted a Swahili proverb to urge Kenyans to show humility and caution in how they treat others.

“As the Swahili proverb wisely cautions: ‘Usitukane wakunga na uzazi ungalipo,” he noted.

Daddy Owen has been a long-time advocate for disability inclusion and awareness. His statement comes at a time when online spaces have increasingly become a source of hate, mockery, and insensitive commentary.

His message seeks to remind Kenyans that respect, compassion, and humanity should guide all interactions—both online and offline.

He urged Kenyans to reflect on their behaviour and remember that mocking people with disabilities only undermines the nation’s shared values of dignity and equality.
