Adelle Onyango shares her journey of breaking free from society’s definition of woman

Media personality and podcaster Adelle Onyango has opened up about her journey to break free from society’s narrow definition of what it means to be a woman.

In an Instagram post on Monday, August 25, 2025, Adelle revealed that for many years she was conditioned to believe there was only one way to embody womanhood and that straying from that rigid definition brought shame.

She explained that in her effort to fit in, she reduced herself until she was confronted with the discomfort of self-abandonment. It was in this painful realisation that she began the process of self-discovery.

“For many years, I was forced to believe that there was only one way to woman and if I veered away from this, I was gifted shame. And so, I tried to fit into this one definition by reducing myself until the discomfort of self-abandonment woke me up,” she wrote.

According to her, the turning point came when she acknowledged that in order to unlock the greatest version of herself, she had to allow all the different women within her to live.

Adelle noted that this awakening enabled her to understand that womanhood cannot be confined to a single identity, but is instead made up of many beautiful ways of being.

“I realised that in order to unlock the greatest version of me, I had to let all the women in me live. I had to acknowledge that there are many beautiful ways to woman and that shame was no longer welcome in my womanhood,” she added.

She stated that shame no longer has a place in her womanhood and that, step by step, she reimagined, redefined, and recreated the meaning of being a woman. Today, she said, she releases women boldly, urging other women to do the same.

“So one step at a time, I re-imagined woman, I redefined woman, I recreated woman, and now, I release woman boldly!”

Sharing the reflection as a gift to her followers, Adelle also encouraged women to embrace their own versions of womanhood and to live free from the fear of shame.

She stressed that every woman has the power to define her own journey and boldly stand in it.

“I share this with you as a gift, a reminder for you to be YOUR version of WOMAN boldly, are you ready to do that?”
