Musician Otile Brown has voiced his disapproval of President William Ruto’s proposal for multi-sectoral forums to address concerns raised by Gen Z, who have been at the forefront of anti-Finance Bill protests.
In response to sustained anti-Finance Bill protests, predominantly led by Gen Zs, Ruto announced that he would not sign the bill into law.
The President also communicated his intention to meet with a range of sectoral leaders, including the youth, clerics and others to discuss national issues.
Reacting to Ruto’s call for multi-sectoral forums, Otile Brown insisted that the government already knows what needs to be done to address the unrest among the youth.
He criticized the proposed forums as a waste of resources and called for accountability from government officials.
“Tatizo tunapenda kupoteza mda na rasilimali yingi kwa maneno, maneno matupu huleta hasara, maongezi ya nini tena?? We all got job to do, kila mtu afanye kazi yake na wajibike. Sote tunajua cha kufanya,” Otile wrote on InstaStories on Sunday June 30, 2024.
The singer highlighted the need to tackle corruption, which he described as a major drain on public funds, resulting in the loss of trillions of shillings.
“Tujifunze vizuri ku manage nchi na rasilimali, ufisadi umezorotesha maisha ya mwananchi ata wawekezaji wanatoroka, kazi zina pungua, ukitaka kumaliza deni la nchi yetu kwanza tuanze na hilo karibia trilioni moja inayopotea kila mwaka. Imagine kama hio pesa ingetengwa ingekua inalipa deni, hamgehitaji ata kuzidisha ushuru,” he added.
Ruto’s plan
President Ruto, meanwhile, has been outlining ambitious programs to tackle the nation’s escalating youth unemployment crisis.
Speaking at the State House on Saturday, June 29, 2024, during a meeting with bishops from the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa, Ruto emphasized his administration’s commitment to creating job opportunities through targeted government initiatives.
“The government has deliberate programs and policies to create job and income opportunities for our young people,” Ruto declared.
“These include the Affordable Housing Programme, digital jobs, labour migration, and industrialization through county aggregation, industrial parks, and special economic zones.”
Ruto added that these initiatives would be discussed in the proposed multi-sectoral forums with youth leaders, clerics, and other stakeholders to address the country’s economic challenges.
The President has been actively engaging with religious leaders to address the nation’s socio-economic issues, reinforcing his administration’s efforts to provide practical solutions for the youth and broader community.
However, Otile Brown’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment among the youth for more direct and immediate action rather than prolonged discussions.
