Detectives attached to the anti-terrorism wing on Thursday, February 17 managed to detonate a bomb that was laid targeting security personnel in Sankuri, Lamu County.

In an intelligence report seen by K24 Digital, officers sighted footprints of about four individuals who were at Mzunguzi which is approximately 3 kilometres from Sankuri towards Mararani.

The officers immediately noticed that the four were suspected militants who were laying Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).

“Following this report, today about 1440hrs through a reliable source this established the approximate location of the likely IED, a point near to initial IED contact which hit a civilian tractor.”

At about 1546hrs a fighting patrol was dispatched to the subject general area where they managed to pinpoint the IED,” the report further read.

The officers pinpointed the IED area at GD 37MGU 611 097 located approximately 3kilometers using a metal detector augmented by a visible disturbance. (This means the IED was successfully detonated after the officers laid charges twice.)

“Upon detonation, a battery, metal fragments and an alarm receiver were exposed confirming that it was a Remote Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (RCIED).

Cases of suspected Al Shabaab militants attacking using IEDs in the country have been on the rise.

Two weeks ago, at least 10 people were killed when a passenger bus hit an IED along a highway in Northeastern Kenya.

According to a police statement then, eight passengers were injured in the deadly explosion that took place when a bus ran over an IED on the Arabia- Mandera highway.

George Seda a regional Commander said that he believes the bomb was planted by Somalia based Al- Shabaab terror group.
