A 60-year-old man from Nyeri Town was on Tuesday afternoon arrested on suspicion of inappropriately touching a 9-year-old girl’s private parts aboard a moving public service vehicle.
The victim was travelling with her grandmother from Gachika Village to Kiganjo Dispensary in an overloaded Toyota Sienta, when the suspect asked the elderly woman if he could help her carry the girl.
Without suspecting that the man had ill intentions, the minor’s grandmother handed her over to the now-suspect.
Police say the suspect allegedly inserted his fingers in the girl’s private parts.
Upon reaching their destination, the girl told her grandmother what had transpired during the journey.
It was at that point that the elderly woman raised the alarm, and the suspect was seized by irate travellers and handed over to police.
The 60-year-old man is being detained at Kiganjo Police Station, area deputy county commander Paul Kuria confirmed.
The girl was undergoing medical tests at the Kiganjo Dispensary as at the time of going to press.
Kuria says it is most likely that the suspect will be charged with engaging in indecent act with a child contrary to section 11 (1) of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006.
