Seven nominated members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly on Tuesday stormed out of a meeting convened by Governor Anne Waiguru and Jubilee Party to discuss the pending impeachment motion against the county chief.
The seven MCAs walked out of the meeting in a huff, claiming that they were being coerced to sign a petition withdrawing their signatures in support of the motion which has given the governor sleepless nights.
The MCAs were summoned to the meeting at the governor’s residence at Kangaru area by Kirinyaga Jubilee branch where they were ordered to withdraw their support of the motion since it’s not sanctioned by party headquarter.
According to the MCAs who talked to the press on condition of anonymity, the meeting was characterized by threats and intimidations by senior Jubilee officials and the county boss.
After five hours of pull and push, the Jubilee officials unveiled a paper and demanded that nominated members of the county assembly append their signatures against their names to denounce the pending impeachment motion tabled by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua Wangui.
“We were given a piece of paper written that we have withdrawn our signatures against the impeachment motion which we were told doesn’t have the support of the party’s head office,” said one of the MCAs.
She added: We were threatened by Jubilee Kirinyaga branch chairman, Muriithi Kangara, that we are going to lose our salaries and later our nomination will be cancelled, but we stood firm and told them that the motion has weighty allegations which should be ventilated through the motion.”
Refusing to sign the pape, the MCAs stormed out, leaving behind only four ward representatives who agreed to append their signatures.
The MCAs, however, refused to address the media outside the governor’s residence, banged their car doors and sped off.
Some members of the Kirinyaga County government told journalists who had camped outside the governor’s residence that neither Governor Waiguru nor the Jubilee officials would issue statements on what transpired in the meeting.
“Members of the press, today the governor has not invited the media and would not be issuing any statement. Please, you can leave us to continue with our work,” one of the officials said.
Only two nominated MCAs skipped the meeting.
The governor has been having sleepless nights since the motion was tabled in the assembly on April 1, 2020.
The MCAs accused her of leading a criminal enterprise aimed at defrauding county coffers by paying fictitious a company millions of shillings.
