It is the season when a significant majority are moving from various places heading back to the places they call home or to meet and stay with friends and family and make merry during the festivities before rushing back to their places of work.

Equally, a sizeable chunk of Kenyans who ordinarily would not find time to travel to their rural homes may take advantage of the time to take with them that extra furniture or any other household item in their urban town which could be more useful upcountry.

It could be extra bedding, clothes that you no longer wear, utensils that clutter your home or even pieces of literature which could be more useful upcountry than in your townhouse.

Now, moving stuff from town back home could prove to be a logistical nightmare if you fail to plan yourself. Also, the exercise could lead to unforeseen damages to the particular items you are moving if extra attention is paid during the process.

These are five things you may want to consider before embarking on the daunting task of moving a few stuff from your city home back to the village.

Take inventory of items to move

Before you want to pack household items to move to your rural home, it is important to make a list of the particular items you would want to move.

This will not only help you know the size of your load and the size of the vehicle to use for moving but also let you identify the packaging materials, the fragility of your stuff and their confidentiality.

For the more confidential documents like car logbooks, title deeds and certificates, proper packing is a non-negotiable.

Also, you will most likely want to keep these documents closer to you than at the back of a moving company’s lorry.

Plan accordingly

Planning will give you the right headspace to execute your travel effortlessly, especially if you plan to move the identified household items alongside your family. With kids in the mix, planning will ensure that they are safe and are not squeezed together with boxes of items at the back of your car.

Planning will also let you determine your desired date of travel from which you will work backwards to create a timeline.

Additionally, with proper planning, you will determine in advance the moving costs, costs of packing materials to be used and the size of car to hire if you are moving solo.

Find a reputable moving company

In the case that you do not want to be at the centre of the hustle of controlling all the variables involved in moving your household items from town to upcountry, getting a reliable moving company will be your next best choice.

One of the best ways to identify a good moving company is to consult your friends and let them give recommendations. But this is not enough; even with the suggestions, it is prudent to check the individual reviews of the companies.

Household items mover

As a rule of thumb, it is advisable to get quotes from at least three or four reputable companies before settling on the one which checks all your boxes.

These boxes could include fair pricing, whether they have insurance on the goods they move and whether they offer packing and offloading services when you finally reach your destination.

Pack household items early

Just to ease some of the stresses associated with a last-minute rush, you should pack your household items early enough to leave you focused on the logistical arrangements of your assigned date of travel.

Also, invest in proper packing materials like sturdy boxes, bubble wraps and sufficient packing paper to properly contain the household items to be transported.

Alternatively, you could easily arrange with your mover to pack the household items you would like to move from the city back home. Being in the business of moving lets these movers understand how to pack each individual item to ensure no damage occurs along the way.

However, for your own convenience, you may want to have a few boxes of essentials near you. These boxes could contain toiletries, basic tools and items which could prove handy during the travel

Ensure there is proper communication

If you plan to use two or more vehicles for your family’s travels and moving household items from the city back home, you will have to keep in clear and constant communication with the drivers involved.

It is important to stay accessible to the various people assisting you in moving the household items. Communication ensures that you clearly identify the routes you are to use and the timelines for arriving at the destination.

It also allows you to take necessary breaks during your trip to recharge so that you remain focused on the journey without being fatigued.
