A University of Nairobi lecturer has been found dead in Karabach Sub Location, Kodera South Location, within Homa Bay County in a suspected suicide case.

The deceased, estimated to be between 60-65 years old, is reported to have taken his own life due to a land dispute. Samwel Owino Mwanda’s body was discovered hanging from a tree by his employee on Thursday, September 19, 2024, morning, using a sisal rope.

According to area chief Joseph Mboga, the lecturer had recently returned from Nairobi, leaving his family behind. Mboga received a phone call from a neighbour who heard a commotion in the lecturer’s compound and rushed to investigate.

“The neighbour found the lifeless body hanging under a tree, with the distraught employee nearby,” Mboga said.

The administrator noted that there were no signs of disturbance on the day of the incident, based on accounts from the employee.

“On Thursday morning, the deceased had a conversation with the employee and even instructed him to milk the cows and prepare breakfast. When the employee returned with breakfast, he tragically found Mwanda hanging,” Mboga explained.

The deceased had relocated from their ancestral home in Nyang’iela, Kotieno Konuong’a Location, to Karabach, where he had settled.

While the exact cause of death remains unclear as no note or statement was left behind, the administrator urged residents to confide in others about their challenges instead of resorting to such actions.

The body has been transferred to the Rachuonyo Sub County Hospital mortuary for preservation.
