The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has demanded the immediate release of Shadrack Kiprono after he was abducted by unknown people suspected to be police officers.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo on Monday, June 24, 2024, issued a statement saying Shadrack was violently abducted by unidentified persons believed to be intelligence officers in South B while getting into his vehicle.

“Good afternoon, friends. Yesterday evening, another innocent young Kenyan fell victim to the draconian tactics of rogue police officers. Shadrack Kiprono was violently abducted by unidentified persons believed to be intelligence officers in South B while getting into his vehicle,” Odhiambo said.

CCTV footage

A CCTV footage that has been doing rounds on social media shows three men in masks descending on Shadrack as he was reaching to his car door, before forcing him into an awaiting white vehicle and hurriedly drove away.

LSK’s Odhiambo has condemned the incident, stating that it was not an arrest since the three people did not introduce themselves as per the law.

She notes that before making any arrest, the officers are supposed to engage the person and inform him/her of the reasons for the arrest.

“The abduction, which was captured on CCTV footage, shows 3 men in masks descend upon Shadrack and force him into a white Land Cruiser.

“Evidently, this was not an arrest as the police did not identify themselves or engage in any conversation prior to the arrest to inform him of his rights. These criminals pretending to exercise police authority must be stopped,” Odhiambo stated.

LSK on finding Shadrack

Odhiambo further said that the LSK is doing its best to find the whereabouts of Shadrack and identify the faction of the police that has been carrying out the abductions.

“We condemn the sustained unconstitutionalities and atrocities being perpetrated by the police and demand the immediate release of Shad.

“The Law Society of Kenya is all hands on deck to find Shad’s whereabouts and identify the criminal faction of the Police carrying out these abductions,” she stated.

Abductions

Since the onset of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, several youths have been abducted over suspicion of being the leaders of the protests.

Content creator Billy Simani, popularly known as Crazy Nairobian, and Dr. Austin Omondi were abducted and later released.

Meanwhile, Shadrack Kiprono alias Shad Khalif was reportedly abducted from Sanasana in South B, Nairobi, on Sunday evening, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Kenya African National Union (KANU) chairman Gideon Moi has also condemned the abductions, decrying the emerging pattern of illegal arrests targeting young people leading the protests, emphasizing that Kenya is a nation governed by the rule of law, not by arbitrary actions.
