President William Ruto has announced that the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the US government is building a new tuition facility for the National Defence College.
Speaking during the National Defence College graduation ceremony held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Karen, Ruto disclosed that the new tuition facility will help improve education adding that there is a growing demand for the National Defence College, thus the college must maintain the capacity to meet education demands for future leaders.
“I’m delighted to announce that the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the US government is building a new tuition facility for the college,” he said.
“It is crucial that the National Defence College maintains the capacity to meet the education needs for the future leaders in different sectors, in response to the growing demand for the National Defence College esteem courses.”
Thanking the US government for its support, Ruto went on to explain that the National Defence College has major achievements within the broader defence education.
“I want in a very special way to thank the government of the United States for this facility,” he said.
“AS we reflect on the contribution of the National Defence College and its alumnus it is important to highlight major achievements within our broader defence education ecosystem especially the existence of the National Defence College Kenya marking a pivot development in the education system.”

The head of state went on to say that the National Defence University has established itself as a specialized degree-awarding institution of national strategy.
He said the university is a dream come true for successive generations of military commanders.
“Since its inauguration, the National Defence University has established itself as a specialized degree-awarding institution of national strategic importance. It is a befitting culmination to a long-held ambition of successive generations of military commenders who envision a platform for enhancing scholarly capacity and integrating it into strategic thinking to keep pace with the evolving dynamic of national, regional and global defence and security,” he explained.

The National Defence University, which is located in Lanet in Nakuru County, offers a range of academic programs related to military and defence studies.
The university held its first graduation ceremony in 2023 and was presided over by Ruto.
Those who graduated consisted of both senior military officers and service members, senior civil servants from different ministries the National Intelligence Service, National Youth Service, Kenya Forest Service, Immigration Department and senior military officers from Burundi, Egypt, Nepal, India, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Zambia.
