The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has threatened to lead protests outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road on Monday, February 12 over the alleged abduction of one of its members.
In a statement on Sunday, LSK President Eric Theuri claimed that lawyer Beatrice Ngethe was abducted by DCI officers last Friday and her whereabouts remain unknown.
“We have learnt that the DCI abducted one of our members by the name Beatrice Ngethe on Friday morning and her whereabouts remain unknown.
“We have visited several police stations to trace her in vain. The family has been tossed around different police stations,” Theuri stated.
According to the LSK boss, the lawyer was abducted and is being held incommunicado for giving legal advice to a client, Kevin Kang’ethe, who escaped from Muthaiga Police Station on Wednesday night. Kang’ethe is wanted in the US over the murder of his girlfriend.
“This is an affront to the legal profession because she’s allegedly been abducted for giving legal advice to a client,” Theuri protested.
The society has vowed to challenge the lawyer’s continued detention.
“We have instructed an Advocate to file urgent habeas corpus application,” Theuri added.
He further invited LSK members to picket outside the DCI headquarters on Monday to protest against what he termed as an attack on the legal profession.
“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” he stated.
