Police officers rarely record the deaths of animals and send it as a signal to Vigilance House.
However, on Thursday evening the death of a weaver bird attracted the attention of the police after it emerged that it had a GPS tracking device fitted on one of its legs.
In a police report filed at Mtito Andei Police Station, Makueni County, a civilian identified as Daniel Mulinge who is a resident at Muthingini village, found the dead bird but the tracking device caught his eye.
“He decided to bring the bird to Nthongoni Police Post after realising that it had a number on the aluminum plate tagged on the right leg written museum Nairobi 39536,” the report filed under OB number 06/12/11/2020 read in part.
The carcas was transported to Mtito Andei Police Station where it was kept in the armory awaiting collection by the Kenya Wildlife Service.
