Wetang’ula warns women against using empowerment money to buy household goods
By Luke Oluoch, July 18, 2025National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has admonished women to put to good use the funds gained from the economic empowerment drive undertaken across the country.
Speaking during a forum in Matayos constituency in Busia County on Friday, July 18, 2025, the speaker challenged for the prudent use of the money, urging women to prioritise expanding their small-scale business rather than acquiring personal goods.
“Akina mama hii pesa tukichanga si ya kununua godoro, mafuta ya nywele ama nguo, ni ya kuimprove maisha yako kibiashara. Kama ukoo na stock ya mboga leo hapa Matayos. Baada ya leo ukiongezwa elfu tano stock yako imepanda by 100 per cent” he stated.
Loosely translated to: “Women, the money we have raised is not for you to go and buy mattresses, hair gels, or clothing items; it is for you to improve your business. If you have your stock of vegetables here in Matayos, after today, if you have been given an additional five thousand, your stock will have risen by 100 per cent,” he stated.
Condemns leaders pushing for division
Speaking at the same function, he further cautioned leaders and diaspora groups against narrowing political discussions to tribal lines.

“Do not take tribalism to the diaspora; you cannot go abroad and just talk to one tribe,” Wetang’ula said, adding that Kenya’s international image is at stake if political leaders encourage exclusivity based on ethnicity.
He called on leaders to guide diaspora communities toward building a cohesive national identity beyond Kenyan borders.
His message was echoed by Deputy President Kindiki, who emphasised the government’s commitment to peace and national stability. Kindiki warned against politically instigated unrest, whether at home or abroad.
“We will not allow instability to undermine our progress. The diaspora must mirror the unity we seek at home,” Kindiki said, reinforcing the administration’s push for global harmony among Kenyans as the 2027 election season approaches.
