National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Busia County to actively engage residents in dismissing claims that the Kenya Kwanza administration has sidelined the Western Kenya region in national development.

Taking to his official X account on Friday, August 1, 2025, moments after holding a consultative meeting with the Busia County Assembly MCAs, Wetang’ula underscored the importance of collaboration between the national and county governments.

MCAs’ role

He emphasised the critical role MCAs play in devolution through representation, legislation, and oversight of county activities.

“Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) play a crucial role in Kenyan devolution, representing their wards, enacting legislation, overseeing the county government, and driving development. They are essential for ensuring local governance and improving the lives of citizens within their counties,” Wetang’ula stated.

“This evening I held a consultative meeting with Busia County Assembly MCAs, where we discussed matters development and areas of collaboration to enhance their oversight roles.”

Ruto’s initiatives in Western

During the meeting, Wetang’ula highlighted various development initiatives by President William Ruto’s administration in Western Kenya.

He called on the MCAs to disseminate accurate information to their constituents and help debunk what he termed as “unfounded rumours” that the region is being ignored in government plans.

“I used the meeting to highlight development projects that President H.E Dr William Ruto’s administration has initiated in the Western region as I urged them to share the same with wananchi to dismiss unfounded rumours that the region has been sidelined by the Kenya Kwanza administration,” Wetang’ula wrote on X.

The meeting also addressed strategies to strengthen the oversight role of MCAs and foster better cooperation with national government institutions.

Wetang’ula pledged his continued support for devolution and encouraged MCAs to remain focused on service delivery and accountability.

Ruto’s Western Kenya projects

In June 2025, President William Ruto hosted leaders from Western Kenya at State House, Nairobi, for a high-level consultative meeting aimed at fast-tracking development initiatives in the region.

The session brought together governors, Members of Parliament, Cabinet Secretaries, and other senior government officials to deliberate on a wide range of projects critical to the socio-economic transformation of the Western region.

The meeting focused on priority areas including revitalisation of key agricultural sectors—particularly sugarcane and coffee—expansion of infrastructure, enhancement of universal health coverage, and improvements in water supply and electricity access.

Ruto emphasised his administration’s commitment to ensuring regional equity in development, noting that Western Kenya holds immense potential that must be unlocked through strategic investment and collaborative governance.

“We are determined to deliver a more equitable Kenya where every region is empowered to grow and contribute to national prosperity,” he said.
