Christabel Murunga, the first wife of late Matungu MP Justus Murunga, has warned the lawmaker’s alleged lover, Agnes Wangui Wambiri, that she (Christabel) will demand Ksh10 million from Agnes for mortuary bills if she doesn’t review demands in a paternity suit she had filed, which has now led to the stopping of Murunga’s burial plans.

Christabel, in her response to Agnes’s suit, said that the late Murunga had only two wives, and that Agnes was not one of them.

In her Friday, November 20 replying affidavit to Agnes’s application, Christabel said: “Neither myself nor [the] second defendant, Grace Murunga, knows the plaintiff or her children.”

The widow said the injunction issued against Murunga’s burial was “disruptive” because, as a family, they had already settled on November 28 as the late parliamentarian’s burial date.

“We have been informed that due to the existing COVID-19 guidelines [on funerals], the deceased should be interred the earliest possible,” read a part of Christabel’s affidavit.

Christabel further said that she wasn’t opposed to Agnes’s application to have her husband’s DNA samples extracted for analysis so as to establish whether he was the biological father of Agnes’s children.

On Wednesday, November 18, Agnes Wangui Wambiri obtained a court order stopping the burial of Murunga until her paternity suit is heard and determined.

“The applicant [is hereby directed] to serve upon the respondents (Murunga’s first and second wives) for inter parte hearing before Hon. Muholi SRM on November 26, 2020,” instructed Milimani Principal Magistrate Agnes Ndunge Makau.

MP Murunga died of diabetes on November 14, 2020 in Mumias, Kakamega County. His remains were transported to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi on November 15 for preservation.

Wambiri claimed there “may be concerted efforts by the 1st and 2nd defendants to lock her and her children out of the burial arrangements and the actual burial event”.
