Uasin Gishu residents beg county govt for transport to Bondo for Raila’s burial
By K24 Digital Reporter, October 16, 2025A section of Uasin Gishu residents has called on the Uasin Gishu County government to facilitate transport for them to attend the burial of Raila Odinga in Bondo on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, October 16, 2025, the residents said that since the ceremony is a state function, the county government should extend its support to locals who wish to pay their last respects to the late opposition leader.

“We also want to stand with the rest of Kenyans and show our support to Raila during his final send-off. The county should make proper arrangements for us to travel to Bondo,” said Caudencia Tanui.
The group emphasised the need for organised transport to ensure that residents can attend the burial safely and in an orderly manner. However, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has urged locals to follow the burial proceedings from home or at designated public viewing centres.
Sudi noted that big screens will be set up in several locations across Eldoret to allow residents to follow the event live, adding that the move is meant to enhance security and avoid crowding at the burial site.

“We have made arrangements for people to watch the proceedings here in Eldoret. This will help prevent stampedes and ensure everyone participates safely,” the MP said.

Honouring Raila
The government has declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a gazette notice issued on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the decision.
“In exercise of powers conferred in Section 3 of the Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, October 17, 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the former Prime Minister Rt. Honourable Raila Odinga,” the notice read.
Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, in India, will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his Opoda home in Bondo, Siaya County.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced the official programme for Raila’s final journey during a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday. He revealed that the burial arrangements were made in line with the wishes of the late leader and his family.
“The family informed President Ruto that according to Raila Odinga’s will, he insisted that he must be buried within the shortest time possible, ideally within 72 hours,” Kindiki said, adding that his wishes must be respected.
