Trans Nzoia mother claims hospital negligence caused son to suffer major complications

Kitale-based Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital in Trans Nzoia County is once again marred in controversy.

This comes as baby Stephen Angunza suffered major complications days after he was admitted to the hospital, where it is alleged that medical interns and not qualified doctors attended to him.

In an exclusive interview with K24 Digital, Hellen Atieno, the mother of the 9-month-old baby, said that his son’s body is partly discoloured due to medical negligence.

“I am in so much pain because my son is critically ill and is likely to lose one of his legs because it is completely damaged. All I need is justice for my son,” Achieng’ told K24 Digital.

The broken mother of four children narrated how her son was abandoned by medics, and whenever she asked questions, she was ignored, and at some point, she was told not to ask questions that he did not have answers to.

In tears, Achieng called on Governor George Natembeya to intervene and bring a lasting solution to what she claimed as unending complaints of laxity and negligence.

“Governor Natembeya, please, we are looking up to you. This hospital does not deserve to be called Shakahola. Kindly chip in and restore sanity for efficient and prudent service delivery,” appealed the mother.

In the right of reply, the hospital’s board chairperson, Prof. Ferdinand Nang’ole, dismissed the allegations that the patient was neglected by medics.

“It is not true that the patient was not attended to. The truth of the matter is that the child was brought in very sick. He was diagnosed with pneumonia, diarrhoea, and convulsions. He was observed by our paediatricians and put on medication,” Nang’ole said.

He added that when the baby’s situation deteriorated, they organised for specialised treatment at a private hospital in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County.

“There was no ICU bed here in Kitale. All the ICU beds at MTRH were occupied, and we secured one for him at Top Hill Hospital in Eldoret,” he added.

He warned the people sharing the images of the child on social media that legal action could be taken against them.

“We urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to respect the privacy of patients and their families,” he said.

Trans Nzoia Women Leaders Community-Based Organisation (CBO), led by the Chief Executive Officer Immaculate Shamala, demanded justice for the patient.

“He did not ask to be used as a test case or a guinea pig for careless experimentation. He did not ask for pain, trauma, or fear. He deserved competent care, nothing less,” Shamala said.
