Tanzania has recorded 30 new coronavirus cases, pushing the country’s total tally to 284, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa says.

The premier, in a public address Wednesday, April 22, said 256 out of the 284 patients are responding well to treatment, whereas seven are under intensive care.

The country has registered 11 COVID-19 recoveries and ten deaths.

Majaliwa said 2, 815 persons who came in contact with the confirmed cases, have since been traced. One thousand seven hundred and thirty three (1, 733) of the contacts were discharged after testing negative for the virus. Twelve of the contacts, however, tested positive for COVID-19, and have been placed under quarantine.

The prime minister made the revelations at the national prayer event held at Karimjee Grounds in Dar es Salaam.

“Let us applaud our Health minister Ummy Mwalimu, her principal secretary, director of health, doctors and nurses for the good job they are doing to help combat the spread of coronavirus in Tanzania. Were they not committed to the COVID-19 fight, we, as a country, would be at a worse position,” he said.

The premier said Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar lead in the number of coronavirus infections in the country.

Neither President John Magufuli nor his vice president, Samia Suluhu, attended the function.
