Silas Jakakimba among 4 appointed to Kirinyaga University council
By Mustafa Juma, July 26, 2025The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba, has officially appointed four new members to the Council of Kirinyaga University.
In a gazette notice published on July 25, 2025, Ogamba said the appointments are in accordance with Section 36(1)(d) of the Universities Act (No. 42 of 2012).
Those appointed are Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga.
Their term of service will run for a period of three years beginning from the date of the notice.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) of the Universities Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints—under paragraph (d)—Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga to be Members of the Council of the Kirinyaga University for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 25th of July, 2025,” the notice read.

Jakakimba’s Sony Sugar appointment
The appointments aim to strengthen governance and oversight at Kirinyaga University as it continues to grow its academic profile and institutional capacity.
The new council members are expected to play a key role in policy formulation, strategic planning, and ensuring the institution upholds the standards set by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
Jakakimba, one of the notable appointees, is a respected lawyer and political strategist, bringing a wealth of experience in leadership and public service to the university council.
His appointment comes barely months after Jakakimba, who worked for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for close to 19 years, was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Nyanza Sugar Company, according to a Gazette notice published on Friday, November 29, 2024.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 6 (1) (e) of the State Corporations Act, as read together with Section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development appoints Silas Jakakimba as a member of the Board of Directors of South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited, with effect from November 29, 2024,” the notice read.
He was bestowed the new responsibility by the then Agriculture CS, Andrew Mwihia, and he was set to serve for three years.
