Search underway for more victims as landslides claim 10 people in Chesongoch
By K24 Digital Reporter, November 1, 2025A rescue operation is ongoing in the Chesongoch area, Marakwet East constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, following the landslides and floods that have occurred since last night.
This comes as the bodies of ten (10) people have been retrieved from the mud in the area, while the search operations for more bodies are accelerating.
According to the Kerio Valley OCPD, Zablon Okoyo, the heavy rain witnessed in the area throughout the night contributed to the upper sections collapsing around 2:00 am on Saturday, November 1, 2025, and sweeping away the homes of the residents, from which the bodies of the ten people have so far been retrieved.
“It swept away so many homes. If you look at the Murkutwo Junction area, you will see house materials like beds and iron sheets being carried away by the water,” Okoyo said.
The officer further noted that the management of the Chesongoch Mission Hospital was compelled to evacuate patients quickly from the hospital to a safe area due to the large amount of water entering and covering the facility.
The patients are now staying in the farm office at the Chesongoch Centre.
“Chesongoch Hospital received a lot of water and mud, a situation that threatened the lives of the patients in the hospital,” added Okoyo.
Due to heavy rain, transport has been significantly disrupted, preventing leaders from reaching the incident scene.
The Kabetwa bridge was washed away, and many roads in the area have been severely damaged, bringing transport activities to a standstill.
“Officers from the Kenya Red Cross Society and other rescue teams have faced many challenges in reaching the scene of the incident after the landslides blocked the road,” Okoyo said.
Nevertheless, residents have been advised not to travel anywhere for now until the situation subsides, while others have been asked to use alternative routes.
