Salasya proposes citizen-led monitoring of county and national govt projects

By , August 20, 2025

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has suggested a set of proposals aimed at ensuring greater accountability in the use of public funds.

In a statement shared on his platforms on X on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the youthful legislator emphasised that transparency in governance must be anchored in citizen participation and oversight.

According to Salasya, the government can only succeed in fighting corruption and misuse of resources if ordinary citizens are empowered to directly monitor projects and spending at both national and county levels. He stressed that without public involvement, promises of accountability remain abstract and open to manipulation.

Accountability

Salasya outlined a four-point framework that he believes will strengthen oversight and restore public confidence in the management of resources.

First, he proposed the establishment of People’s Oversight Committees in every county and across the national government. These committees, he said, would give citizens a direct voice in tracking projects and exposing wastage.

Secondly, Salasya called for the creation of public scorecards and quarterly dashboards to measure progress on government projects. By publishing these updates regularly, Kenyans would be able to see how funds are being spent and which initiatives are lagging.

The third measure is the holding of Annual Citizens’ Accountability Forums, where leaders would be required to present reports on their promises and spending. These forums would also provide the public with an opportunity to question officials directly.

Finally, Salasya urged the government to partner with civil society organisations to audit manifesto delivery. He argued that civil society plays an independent role in scrutinising government actions, making it an essential ally in the fight against corruption.

Commitment to transparency

The legislator underscored that these measures are not just suggestions but steps that must be taken if Kenya is to end the cycle of corruption scandals that have plagued successive administrations.

“This is how we will monitor public funds and make sure every shilling is accounted for,” Salasya affirmed.

By pushing for citizen-led oversight, Salasya has positioned himself among a growing number of leaders advocating for participatory governance. His proposals highlight the increasing demand by Kenyans for accountability, transparency, and tangible results from those entrusted with public resources.
