All Memba Sacco vehicles have been grounded following the death of a woman who was violently thrown out of one of their matatus on the Thika-Nairobi highway last week.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) also summoned the Sacco officials for censure and ordered mandatory compliance inspection of their fleet of vehicles in Nairobi.
In a statement to the media on Tuesday, February 9, NTSA also condoled the family of 26-year-old Judy Wanjiku Nyaga who died a day after being thrown out of the Memba Sacco matatu over a fare disagreement.
Police have since impounded the offending matatu after it was tracked to Mwea
Speaking to K24 Digital on Tuesday, Juja OCPD Dorothy Migarisha said police officers are still searching for the matatu driver and his two touts.
Migarisha said that the incident was first reported on Saturday, February 6, when the now-deceased Judy and John Njoroge (the other victim of the matatu touts), walked into the station after they were violently shoved out of the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses said that the matatu driver allegedly also wanted to run them over after his tout threw them out of the moving vehicle.
But onlookers reacted quickly and pulled them out of the matatu’s path.
After the incident, the duo was treated at a Ruiru hospital and discharged.
