Ruto revokes Mary Wambui’s appointment as CA chair

President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai as the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority (CA).

In a gazette notice dated Friday, August 8, 2025, Ruto named Charles Kamau Karondo to replace Wambui with immediate effect.

Karondo will serve for three years.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint CHARLES KAMAU KARONDO to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from 8th August, 2025. The appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai is revoked,” the gazette notice read.

Ruto had appointed Wambui on December 2, 2022, to replace Gilbert Kibe, who resigned.

Following the revocation of her appointment as CA board chair, Wambui has been appointed to chair the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency.

Wambui lands new appointment

Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Murithi Mugaa, in a gazette notice dated August 8, 2025, revoked the appointment of Charles Kamau Karondo, who has been appointed by Ruto to replace Wambui.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 66 (1) (a) of the Water Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, appoints Mary Wambui Mungai to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency… The appointment of Charles Kamau Karondo is revoked,” the gazette notice stated.

Wambui is a chief executive officer with over 30 years of success in various industries.

She has served as a board member in several entities, including as a board member of Kenyatta National Hospital for seven years, where she served as chair of the Finance and All Purposes Committee, and as chair of the Corporate Strategy and Enterprise Committee.
