Ruto mourns with Ghana after tragic helicopter crash claims lives of 2 minister

President William Ruto has conveyed his condolences to Ghana’s President John Mahama and the people of Ghana after a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including two ministers.

In a statement released on his official X account on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Ruto extended his condolences to the families of those who perished in the tragic helicopter crash while affirming Kenya’s solidarity with Ghanians during this difficult time.

“We extend our condolences to H.E. President John Mahama, the Government, the people of Ghana and the bereaved families following a tragic helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two ministers.

Likewise, Ruto added, “We stand in solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss and offer our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. Rest In Peace,” Ruto said.

Helicopter Crash

Worth noting, according to official reports by the Ghanaian government, two Ministers were on board a Military Helicopter which was carrying three crew and five passengers on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. However went off the radar and later on crashed, killing at least 8 people.

The government spokesperson revealed that the Ministers on board were Defence Minister Edward Omane and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

At the time when the incident was confirmed, the Ghana Armed Forces said the Z9 helicopter, which was carrying three crew and five passengers, had gone “off the radar” while also adding that It had taken off from the capital, Accra, at 09:12 local time (and GMT) and was heading to the town of Obuasi for an event to tackle illegal mining.

Following a report by the Ghana Armed Forces, the eight bodies have been retrieved from the wreckage and have been transferred to the capital, Accra, in a military plane.

On the other hand, according to the government spokesperson, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all his scheduled activities for the rest of the week and declared three days of mourning starting from Thursday, August 7,2025.

The government, through the president’s chief of staff, directed the country’s flags to fly at half-mast. He also extended condolences to “the servicemen who died in service to the country,” on behalf of President Mahama and the government.

Notably, the authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, with the Ghanaian military saying investigations had been launched.
