Ruto mourns death of former Nigerian president Buhari
By Nancy Marende, July 14, 2025President William Ruto mourned the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a towering statesman and a true African patriot who championed unity, integrity, and development across the continent.
In a statement on Monday, July 14, 2025, President Ruto expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt sympathies to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon the passing of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
He stated that Buhari’s legacy of steadfast commitment to national liberation, public service, and regional stability would remain enduring.
“President Buhari’s demise is a loss not only to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also to the entire African continent, which has been immeasurably enriched by his wisdom and steadfast commitment to the liberation and prosperity of the Nigerian people,” he said.

“During his tenure in office, President Buhari championed the fight against corruption, advanced regional security initiatives to counter terrorism, and supported Africa’s agenda for economic integration,” he added.
President Ruto also recalled President Buhari’s state visit to Kenya in January 2016 as a landmark moment in strengthening Kenya-Nigeria bilateral relations.
Further, he remembered Buhari’s congratulatory message following his election in August 2022, describing it as a reflection of the Nigerian leader’s faith in democratic values and Pan-African solidarity.
“In this time of grief, Kenya stands in solidarity with the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. May the legacy of President Buhari continue to inspire all of us in our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across Africa. Please accept, Your Excellency and Dear Brother, my sincere condolences and the assurances of my highest esteem,” he added.

Buhari, who led Nigeria between 2015 and 2023, died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, aged 82.
He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
