Ruto appoints all 19 Cabinet Secretaries approved by parliament

President William Ruto has appointed all the 19 Cabinet Secretaries approved the Members of Parliament on Wednesday August 7, 2024.

In a Special Gazette Notice, Ruto confirmed their appointment before the swearing-in office scheduled for Thursday, August 8, 2024, at State House.

Their swift appointments allow Ruto to now fully reconstitute his Cabinet which has been vacant following the unprecedented move to dismiss his previous Cabinet.

In the absence of Cabinet Secretaries, all ministries were run by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi assisted by the relevant Principal Secretaries in each docket.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 152 (2) of the Constitution, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint:

“Kithure Kindiki, Hon. (Prof.). Roselinda Soipan Tuya, John Mhadi Ng’onga, Justin Bedan Muturi, Aden Bare Duale, Alice Wabone, Julius Migos Ogamba, Davis Chirchir, Rebecca Miano, Hassan Ali Joho,Alfred Nganga Murua, Eric Murithi Muuga, Salim Mvurya Mgala, Debra Mlongo Barasa, (Dr.), Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, James Opiyo Wandayi, Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u. (Dr.).

“Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, Andrew Mwihia Karanja, (Dr.), to be Cabinet Secretaries of the Government of the Republic of Kenya,” the Special Gazette Notice read in part.

MPs approval

The MPs, however, rejected one of the nominees Stella Lang’at who had been named to the gender docket.

The amendment to save Lang’at’s nomination, proposed by Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala, was withdrawn at the last minute.

The House approved the Committee on Appointments’ report, which recommended the appointment of the 19 other nominees.

In his appointment, Ruto did not consider Lang’at who was rejected by the Committee on Appointment and the National Assembly.

MPs approved the appointments of Cabinet Secretaries Kindiki (Interior), Barasa (Health), Wahome (Lands), Migos (Education), Tuya (Defence), Muhia (Agriculture), Duale (Environment), Muga (Water), Chirchir (Roads) and Nyambura (ICT).

Others approved were Mbadi (Treasury), Mvurya (Trade), Miano (Tourism), Wandayi (Energy), Murkomen (Youth Affairs), Hassan Joho (Mining), Mutua (Labour and Social Protection), Oparanya (Cooperatives), and Muturi (Public Service).

Reacting to the approval, Duale vowed to serve Kenyans diligently in the environment docket.

“During my approval hearings, I pledged to focus on reforestation, environmental conservation, carbon credit markets, and ensuring carbon projects benefit local communities. With the approval process complete, I am ready to serve the people of Kenya,” Duale stated.
