Robert Mbui dismisses claims that Gachagua is secretly working with Ruto

Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has brushed off claims by Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is secretly working with President William Ruto.

This comes amid growing tensions in the United Opposition even as they continue to deliberate on who will flagbearer in the 2027 general polls.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Mbui said such accusations are not only baseless but also contradict the political history and Gachagua’s ouster from the Kenya Kwanza ruling coalition.

“I have worked closely within the opposition, and at no point have I seen any indication that the former Deputy President is collaborating with President Ruto in any secret arrangement,” Mbui stated.

“If anything, just about a year ago, Gachagua was humiliated on the floor of the National Assembly and in the Senate. He faced accusations of tribalism, and those issues have never been properly addressed.”

The legislator was responding to claims by Kioni, who recently claimed that the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party boss may be engaging in covert political dealings with Ruto despite public tensions between the two.

Mbui questioned the logic behind such accusations, especially given the visible political rift between Ruto and Gachagua.

“The dust has not even settled. You can still sense Gachagua’s bitterness over what happened to him. To now accuse him of working with the regime is simply absurd,” he said.

 Kioni’s bombshell

According to Kioni, Gachagua met leaders in Narok County at an undisclosed date, where he tried to explain why the DCP was denying Narok Town Ward aspirant Joshua Ole Kaputa a party ticket for the upcoming by-elections.

Speaking on a local Radio station on Sunday, 28, 2025, he said the meeting had 15 members, among them members of the clergy, that there was an arrangement made between him and President Ruto, and Joshua would be given a nomination at a later time.

“Gachagua told them that William Ruto has already sent emissaries to them and they had an arrangement to put their houses in order and then meet to have a discussion,” Kioni said.

“And he was saying, “by that time I will have the 7 million votes from the mountain region, 1 million from Kalonzo, and 800,000 from Matiang’i. I will now have more than half of the cake, and I will share some of it with the Maasai community. So Joshua, you should wait; we will nominate you.”

Kioni insisted that the Jubilee party is willing to work with like-minded parties and will not onboard anyone involved in sinister political deals.

“We would like to work with like-minded parties that actually believe in sending William Ruto home, not in ‘get your people and I get mine, he noted.
