PS Omollo pledges support to families of Kisumu-Kakamega highway crash victims
By Cy Muganda, August 8, 2025Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has expressed his condolences to families affected by the Kisumu–Kakamega highway accident, pledging government support to help them cope with the tragedy.
In a statement posted on his X account on August 8, 2025, Omollo assured that the national government would collaborate with the County Government of Kisumu and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) to provide the affected families with all necessary assistance during this difficult time.
“We stand with the family and will extend all necessary support in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu and JOOTRH,” he stated.
The Principal Secretary also offered prayers for the recovery of the survivors currently receiving medical treatment at JOOTRH.
“In this moment of profound grief, we pray for the souls of the departed to rest in eternal peace, and for divine healing to touch the 29 survivors receiving care at JOOTRH,” he added.

Omollo revealed that the victims included family members of Maj. (Rtd) Solomon Obange, former Head of Security at Parliament, and Dr Dick Obange of Maseno University.
“No words are sufficient to express our sorrow as we mourn with the larger family and friends of Maj. (Rtd) Solomon Obange, former Head of Security at Parliament, and Dr. Dick Obange of Maseno University, who have lost 25 loved ones in the tragic Kisumu road accident today,” he said.
Kisumu road crash details
According to a Facebook statement posted on August 8, 2025, by the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), which received the victims of the crash, at least 21 lives were lost, and 21 others were injured.
The bus involved was carrying 61 family members returning from a burial in Nyahera, located in Kisumu West sub-county, and was headed to Nyakach.
“Staff at JOOTRH moved swiftly this evening to receive and save the lives of survivors from a tragic road accident that occurred at the Coptic roundabout area along the Kisumu-Kakamega road,” the hospital reported.

The hospital further confirmed that 19 bodies were brought in directly from the crash site, while two additional victims, including a child, died while receiving treatment.
“Twenty-one of the occupants are currently stable and receiving treatment at the hospital’s Emergency and Accident Unit,” the hospital added.
Condolence messages
In a heartfelt statement issued on the night of August 8, 2025, President William Ruto directed traffic enforcement officers to intensify road safety operations following the fatal accident.
“Our prayers are with the victims of the terrible accident that occurred tonight on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway. May the Almighty give strength to the families to bear with the loss. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Ruto stated.
“We ask traffic enforcers to act swiftly to bring to book those responsible for any acts of negligence leading to the accident and address all traffic violations to ensure road safety across the country,” Ruto wrote.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, in his message, described the incident as painful and inexplicable.
“It is another dark night of grief. The tragic loss of another 21 souls in the Kisumu bus crash just a day after two other fatal accidents claimed lives is painful and inexplicable,” Kindiki mourned.
“Deep sympathies and prayers for grace to the families that have lost their dear ones,” he added.
