Police arrest person of interest linked to narcotics trade
By Paulette Mboga, August 20, 2025Police in Garissa have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking after officers arrested a person of interest in the narcotics trade in the Ziwani area of Garissa Town on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Acting on intelligence reports, officers from the National Police Service (NPS) stationed at Garissa Police Station intercepted the individual, leading to a significant recovery.
According to a statement from the police, the suspect was found carrying a red carrier bag containing 20 balls of cannabis sativa. Alongside the drugs, officers also recovered Ksh1,800 in mixed denominations, suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and detained at Garissa Police Station for further processing.
Crackdown on narcotics
The National Police Service has confirmed that the seized cannabis has been secured as an exhibit at the station and will be presented in court as part of the prosecution’s case. The suspect is expected to be arraigned once investigations are complete.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to dismantling networks that distribute narcotics in Garissa and across the country. The operation in Ziwani is the latest in a series of efforts aimed at curbing the supply and use of illegal substances that continue to affect local communities, especially the youth.
Drug abuse has long been a growing concern in Garissa and other parts of the country, with law enforcement linking the trade to increased cases of crime, school dropouts, and social instability. Police emphasised that intelligence-led operations will remain at the core of their strategy in dealing with narcotics peddlers.
Police further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving drugs. Community cooperation, they said, is essential in winning the war against narcotics.
“The sale and use of drugs not only destroy lives but also fuel insecurity in our towns. We remain relentless in this fight, but the public must also play its part,” the statement read.
The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by the police to stamp out the narcotics trade in Kenya. With continued intelligence sharing and cooperation between the police and the public, authorities remain optimistic about significantly reducing the circulation of illegal drugs in the region.
